Recommended for people who are ready to go to Haiti for mission/medical/educational trip orlike myself to learn and to communicate better with my Haitian Creole (Kreyol) speaking ESL students.Well organized, very easy to use and plenty of references. Simple everyday conversations and also includesbasic medical conditions/terms.Someone had said, "Creole: say it as it is written", he probably meant it's nothing like English Language orFrench i.e. it's phonetically written language thus every letter must be pronounced. I'm learninga bit by bit. Good luck!
I bought this book in preparation for a 3 week missions trip to Haiti I participated in during June of 2011. It is not very helpful unless you are planning on rescuing people that are stuck under a building from an Earthquake. Since the earthquake that initiated the book's writing happened a year and a half before I bought the book, it was not very useful. I gave the book away when I left Haiti. The "phrases" that it contains are almost completely involved with asking where something hurts, have you had a bowel movement recently, where can I get a bulldozer, did someone live in that collapsed house, etc. Mostly reconstruction and medical emergency related. I spent 3 weeks at a small Christian church and school 100 miles away from any earthquake damage and the book was mostly useless. Even the included dictionary had few of the words I actually tried to look up. Instead, I would recommend "Creole Made Easy" by Wally Turnbull also available here on Amazon. That book actually explains how to say things you might actually want to say. (No, I don't get a kickback by that plug. I just want people that go to Haiti to be able to talk to the wonderful people that live there.)
I am traveling to Haiti in a couple of months and thought that this would be a good supplament to my language lessons. For where I'll be traveling, many of the phrases won't help, however, loads of guidance. I'm the student that needs to hear the spoken word, rather than try and read it so I also purchased an audio set of lessons that have been most helpful. If I was going to be in an area where there were hotels, restaurants, and sightseeing opportunities, this would be more valuable, but I'm not. Maybe when I am able to return, I'll have a better handle on the spoken word and this book will be a better resource.
Bought for a mission trip to Haiti. Great find for a refrence!!! would reccomend to anyone traveling to Haiti
I'm not a Creole expert. I bought this book for my first trip to Haiti. But I had my fiance (who is Haitian, born & raised), look at it & he is the one who had the issues with it.First, it is a good book for what it is, and while there are some mistakes, it provides some important information. However, if you are doing a religious outreach, you might be better off picking up a book specific to that. My niece bought 2 phrasebooks and CDs on her way from Dominica Republic to Haiti, for just a couple of dollars U.S. Those contained phrases specific to faith, which are quite useful on mission trips. You can also get those online by searching, so that's not so much of an issue.I would have preferred to have a better index in this book, to treat it somewhat like a dictionary. When I spoke no Creole at all, I just would hand it to the Haitians with whom I would try to communicate, and they could find the phrase they wanted to say. It worked, but not easily. The alphabet is not accurate. For example, J and G are NOT the same letter name. Also, there is no Q, although that is part of the Creole alphabet. The way I use the book is to write each phrase & proverb on a flashcard & just start memorizing. It's a good start, but not perfect, by any means. The cultural information is interesting and pretty good, from what I could see. But it is so minimal, it doesn't really give enough information on any one subject.Personally, I would like to see the mistakes fixed, and have the book reformatted as half phrasebook & half dictionary.
I gave this as a gift for both my brother and sister and they both were really excited and couldn't wait to use it on their trip to Haiti in the spring.
Very good language explanation, and easy to use the book itself because it is logically formatted.
Love this book.
