About the Author
Petar Meseldžija began his career in 1981, publishing the comic strip "Krampi" in the Stripoteka, one of the best known comic magazines in the country. This was followed by a series of short comics and his work on Tarzan.

In 1991 he moved to the Netherlands. Soon after, he dedicated himself to illustration and painting. During the 1990s he painted posters and greeting cards, illustrated a few books, had his first solo exhibition, and participated in many group exhibitions in various galleries and museums in Serbia, the Netherlands and the U.S. His work has been published in a variety of books and periodicals all over the world.

Petar has also collaborated on 2 books from the Diablo III series, published by Blizzard/Insight Editions, doing a number of drawings for this project. He worked for Scholastic Inc., US, creating 11 covers for their two children’s fantasy series, Children of the Lamp, by P.B. Kerr, and The Unicorn Chronicles, by Bruce Coville. Previous books include collections of his sketches and drawings; a book of his Tarzan comics, The Legend of Steel Bashaw as well as the art book The Art of Petar Meseldzija.

Among many awards which he received for his work are: “Plaque The International Golden pen of Belgrade, 1994”, Yugoslavia (Serbia); The “Art Show Judges Choice Award” – 59th World Science Fiction Convention, Philadelphia, 2001, US.; Two Silver Awards from “Spectrum 4 and Spectrum 10 – The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art”, U.S.; Gold Award “Spectrum 16 – The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art”, U.S.

The Stranger is not merely one of the most widely read novels of the 20th century, but one of the books likely to outlive it. Written in 1946, Camus's compelling and troubling tale of a disaffected, apparently amoral young man has earned a durable popularity (and remains a staple of U.S. high school literature courses) in part because it reveals so vividly the anxieties of its time. Alienation, the fear of anonymity, spiritual doubt--all could have been given a purely modern inflection in the hands of a lesser talent than Camus, who won the Nobel Prize in 1957 and was noted for his existentialist aesthetic. The remarkable trick of The Stranger, however, is that it's not mired in period philosophy.

The plot is simple. A young Algerian, Meursault, afflicted with a sort of aimless inertia, becomes embroiled in the petty intrigues of a local pimp and, somewhat inexplicably, ends up killing a man. Once he's imprisoned and eventually brought to trial, his crime, it becomes apparent, is not so much the arguably defensible murder he has committed as it is his deficient character. The trial's proceedings are absurd, a parsing of incidental trivialities--that Meursault, for instance, seemed unmoved by his own mother's death and then attended a comic movie the evening after her funeral are two ostensibly damning facts--so that the eventual sentence the jury issues is both ridiculous and inevitable.

Meursault remains a cipher nearly to the story's end--dispassionate, clinical, disengaged from his own emotions. "She wanted to know if I loved her," he says of his girlfriend. "I answered the same way I had the last time, that it didn't mean anything but that I probably didn't." There's a latent ominousness in such observations, a sense that devotion is nothing more than self-delusion. It's undoubtedly true that Meursault exhibits an extreme of resignation; however, his confrontation with "the gentle indifference of the world" remains as compelling as it was when Camus first recounted it. --Ben Guterson

Both translations are superb, but Ward's will affect a naturalized narrative, while Browner's will strengthen Cocteau's reemerging critical standing. Since 1946 untold thousands of American students have read a broadly interpretative, albeit beautifully crafted British Stranger . Such readers have closed Part I on "door of undoing" and Part II on "howls of execration." Now with the domestications pruned away from the text, students will be as close to the original as another language will allow: "door of unhappiness" and "cries of hate." Browner has no need to "write-over" another translation. With Cocteau's reputation chiefly as a cineaste until recently, he has been read in French or not at all. Further, the essay puts a translator under less pressure to normalize for readers' expectations. Both translations show the current trend to stay closer to the original. I wanted to finish this book before writing a review. After reading three other books on Power Pivot and Power BI before reading Dan's book, Beginning Power BI, I still found it refreshing. Dan meticulously takes the reader on a journey of rediscovery of familiar topics in a new way. There is always something new to learn, even if you have read other books.In each chapter, the books sets out with topics to master and then delves deeply into each without being too technical. The chapter ends with a hands-on exercise with relevant data files to allow the reader enrich his/her learning experience. To do the exercises, I created copies of the original data files and saved the results in a new folder named ChapterLabs Practice that houses each chapter lab exercise.What distinguishes Beginning Power BI from other books I have read is the inclusion of three use cases for a complete solution in Chapter 12. It is like a test to see how much you have learned. I was able to duplicate the results for use cases 1 and 3 similar to Dan's results, except for use case 2. I think the problem is from the Quota table in Table 12-4 which has different columns from the Quotas table in the relationship model in Figure 12-12. The columns in the sales quotas four data files which were combined to create the Quotas query did not contain have those columns in the relationship model. I want to believe that Quota table and Quotas table are the same except for the "s" and this is very confusing to a beginner.I intend to contact Dan to see if he resolve this confusion for me. I would like to know if any other reader has obtained the same result for use case 2 as Dan's, or if it is just me not being able to obtain a similar result as Dan's.Stay tuned for an update after hearing from the author!

Good reference

It's mostly about Power Pivot. It only has about 140 pages on Power BI. It covers the bare essentials.

An excellent book on building the fundamentals of PowerPivot to get into DAX. I have been struggling to get "my head around" DAX as I am a developer and have not done lots of analytics with Excel. I have done analytics with Python and R but was struggling with PowerPivot and Excel. I just finished chapter 2 and am looking forward to devouring the rest of the book to further enhance my PowerPivot and DAX knowledge to take Power BI to the next level. I would highly recommend this book to anyone digging into Power BI and having a hard time with DAX due to the foundation of DAX being PowerPivot and Excel Analytics.

As usual, Dan does a good job starting off small and growing your skills as you move through the book. I loved how he started us in Excel to build our base of skills and then moves us to the new Power BI tools. Other books start you off in the Power BI tool, assuming someone else has already done the hard work to set up data sets for you. I found the exercises easy to follow and all the code I have tried so far works well. Apress even has an option to buy the eBook as a companion for a low cost.

This should be required reading for anyone that would like to be productive in PowerBi. Dan does a great job of teaching the fundamentals of how to acquire, shape, and visualize data using PowerBi. Great book! Really like the build up of the process to get the underlying data structures correct (core fundamental building blocks to get from data to analytics with details, examples, and hands-on exercises). Recommended reading for anyone building Power BI solutions or even just as a handy reference tool when you and DAX start feeling like frenemies.
